T-Mobile has officially discontinued its Proxy by DIGITS feature, which provided users with an additional phone number for free. This change took place last month, specifically on April 9.
The Proxy by DIGITS service was designed to help customers maintain their privacy while making calls and sending texts. Customer representatives conveyed this decision to users, leading to disappointment among some.
However, the reactions appeared somewhat subdued, indicating that the service may not have been widely popular, which could be a factor in its discontinuation. The Proxy by DIGITS feature was particularly beneficial for those looking to keep their personal phone numbers confidential, especially for e-commerce transactions and social media interactions.
It acted as a sort of “spam folder,” allowing users to manage communications without revealing their primary number. Activation was straightforward through the DIGITS app or online, and no additional SIM card was needed.
Despite its advantages, the feature had limitations, such as requiring an internet connection and not providing data services. Last year, it became evident that T-Mobile was considering phasing out the DIGITS service altogether.
The company began offering users in certain markets a paid alternative to gain a second line for talk and text at competitive rates, starting from as low as $10 with discounts available for autopay. While some users found DIGITS to be somewhat confusing due to the need for a dedicated app, many customers appreciated the opportunity to use a free proxy number.
With the recent discontinuation, it seems likely that a number of users are dissatisfied with the decision. T-Mobile has been approached for comment, and updates will be provided once a response is received.
