Huawei is set to introduce a new smartphone form factor later this year, likely expanding its innovative reach into the market. Last September, the company launched its tri-fold Mate XT Ultimate Design phone, which features a 10-inch display upon full expansion. Despite facing significant U.S. sanctions due to national security concerns, Huawei continues to demonstrate resilience and creativity, firmly establishing itself as a key player in the foldable smartphone market and remains the second largest manufacturer in this space, just behind Samsung.
Recently, during Samsung’s Unpacked event, the company showcased a prototype of a tri-fold phone, hinting at potential plans for a Galaxy tri-fold release later this year. However, Huawei aims to stay ahead by possibly introducing a rollable smartphone. A recent Weibo post from leaker @Setsuna Digital suggests that Huawei could commence mass production of this innovative device soon.
The concept of a “rollable” display allows users to adjust the screen size on command, making the device more versatile by extending or retracting the screen using advanced technology. In fact, Huawei filed a patent for this technology back in 2020 and 2021, which highlighted the use of rollers and strategically placed magnets to enhance display size. The ability to transition from a compact phone to a larger-screen device enhances user experience, potentially setting it apart from traditional foldables.
Other manufacturers, like Motorola, have explored similar concepts, showcasing their own expansions in screen technology. If the reports about Huawei’s upcoming rollable smartphone come true, it could redefine market standards. Nevertheless, limited U.S. availability of Huawei’s devices means that competitors like Samsung might play a significant role in introducing such innovations to the broader U.S. audience.
Notably, the rollable design may eliminate the crease often associated with foldable phones, further enhancing the aesthetic experience for users.
