Verizon Unveils Rugged 5G Device Designed for Disaster Preparedness and Resilience

Posted on 25 June 2025

Verizon has officially announced the certification of Semtech as a partner within its “Verizon Frontline Verified” program. This validation includes the new AirLink XR60 5G router, which has passed rigorous testing and is now approved for deployment by public safety agencies. These robust devices are designed for use in challenging environments, combining 5G capabilities with Wi-Fi 6 technology. The AirLink XR60 incorporates an intelligent hot failover feature, ensuring uninterrupted communication even during network outages.

This functionality is particularly crucial in emergency situations where reliable connectivity is necessary for effective response efforts. Additionally, the router offers edge computing capabilities, allowing for data processing and video analysis at the source. This feature is valuable for real-time updates, such as live video feeds critical during emergency responses. Kinana Hussain, Vice President of Networking Solutions at Semtech, expressed pride in having the XR60 and other AirLink devices validated by Verizon Frontline.

He emphasized the long-standing use of AirLink products in mission-critical scenarios for over 25 years, highlighting a shared commitment to providing reliable solutions for public safety agencies. While consumers may not directly benefit from this technology, it plays an essential role in enabling first responders to remain connected during disasters. Past experiences with natural disasters or significant outages underline the importance of keeping communication lines open, as this can lead to faster response times and better-coordinated relief efforts. Having more certified hardware options enhances flexibility for first responders, allowing them to select technology that suits their field needs.

Reliable connectivity can significantly impact outcomes in critical situations, ensuring that first responders have the tools necessary to adapt to evolving challenges and perform their duties safely and effectively. With devices like the XR60, these teams are better equipped to handle emergencies and safeguard the communities they serve.
