Apple’s WWDC25 Codenames Indicate a Shift from Flat Design to Glass Aesthetics, Reports Reuters.

Posted on 8 June 2025

Apple’s WWDC25 is set to unveil significant changes, particularly in its design approach. A major highlight includes the introduction of two internal codenames: Liquid Glass and Glasswing. These names indicate a notable shift in Apple’s design philosophy, suggesting that the era of flat design is coming to an end.

Liquid Glass, which will debut with iOS 26, is a new user interface style that Apple aims to implement across all its platforms, including iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, visionOS, and CarPlay later this year. This redesign promises a sleek, cohesive aesthetic that incorporates elements like transparency, shimmer, and glass-like depth in toolbars and in-app controls. The objective is to establish a unified visual identity for Apple’s ecosystem, moving away from the flat visuals that have dominated for over a decade.

The second internal name, Glasswing, is used for the upcoming iPhone planned for 2027, which will mark the device’s 20th anniversary. This model is anticipated to feature a revolutionary design characterized by curved glass edges, ultra-thin bezels, and a seamless front display without cutouts. The name draws inspiration from the glasswing butterfly, renowned for its nearly invisible wings, symbolizing Apple’s commitment to creating aesthetically pleasing, glass-centric devices.

The connection between Liquid Glass and Glasswing points to a strategic alignment between Apple’s software and future hardware developments. As Apple transitions into this new design phase, the introduction of Liquid Glass is expected to facilitate the next generation of products that resonate with this glass-focused aesthetic. Alan Dye, Apple’s human interface design vice president, is anticipated to introduce Liquid Glass during the WWDC event.

While specific details remain confidential, the branding hints at Apple’s direction for its platform identity. With growing competition in the tech landscape, particularly in AI, Apple appears to be banking on a refined design language to maintain user engagement. WWDC kicks off on June 9, where both Liquid Glass and Glasswing will take the spotlight.
