iPhone 17 Molds Reveal Apple’s Design Modifications and New Features

Posted on 17 March 2025

Recently, leaker Sonny Dickson revealed the metal molds for the upcoming iPhone 17 series. These molds, created for case manufacturers, provide a glimpse into the dimensions and design changes for the new models, which include the iPhone 17 Ultra, iPhone 17 Pro, and the super-thin iPhone 17 Air.

While these molds may not be entirely accurate, they do highlight the updated housing for the rear cameras, which are designed to accommodate the new spatial photography capabilities. The iPhone 17 series will continue with its vertically mounted rear cameras, allowing for the capture of 3D photos viewable on devices like the Vision Pro.

The camera housing for the iPhone 17 Ultra and Pro features distinct shapes and sizes, each housing three cameras. In contrast, the iPhone 17 Air’s thinner camera housing is horizontal and designed to accommodate just one rear camera.

Thanks to advancements in computational photography, Apple aims to utilize this single camera for both standard wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle shots. In terms of design, the molds indicate that the iPhone 17 Air will be exceptionally thin, yet it will boast the largest camera bump within the series.

Additionally, all four iPhone 17 models will feature an Action Button above the volume controls on the left side. This button can be customized to quickly activate specific features, enhancing user experience.

The iPhone 17 series is slated for unveiling in early September, with a release later the same month. All models will ship with iOS 19 pre-installed and will be powered by either the A19 application processor or the A19 Pro, depending on the model.

Both chipsets are expected to be manufactured using TSMC’s third-generation 3nm technology.
