New Android Auto Spotify Feature Promises to Make Road Trips More Enjoyable and Entertaining

Posted on 25 May 2025

Spotify is set to enhance its user experience by integrating the Jam feature with Android Auto, allowing friends to listen to and control a shared playlist while on the road. This feature, introduced in 2023, enables users to create group playlists that everyone involved can edit in real time.

Unlike Apple Music’s SharePlay, which only functions on iOS, Spotify’s Jam is designed for cross-platform accessibility, making it easier for more users to participate. The announcement was made during Google I/O as part of Google’s initiative to improve in-car app functionality.

With new media app templates for Android Auto, Google aims to keep drivers focused while providing enhanced controls. These templates allow developers to create features that mirror mobile app designs but are adapted for safe use while driving.

Spotify plans to leverage these new tools for an upgraded in-car experience. Soon, users will be able to initiate a Jam session from the Spotify media screen in Android Auto.

Additionally, passengers can join the session by scanning a QR code with their phones, enabling them to manage the music without needing to interact with the car’s display or distract the driver. The updated Jam experience is expected to roll out in the coming months, with support on Android Automotive OS anticipated later this year.

This move aligns with Google’s broader strategy to enrich in-car app experiences, covering areas like messaging, navigation, and gaming for vehicles equipped with Google services. For Spotify users, this development promises a more interactive listening experience during travel, allowing for a shared musical journey without the need to pass around a device.
