A New Alternative to Android and iOS Has Become Essential

Posted on 9 May 2025

The return of the president who limited Huawei’s access to US technology has prompted major Chinese companies to collaborate on a new operating system. This initiative can be seen as a proactive measure against potential restrictions from the US government.

While it may take some time for these efforts to materialize, the move towards a Google-free Android alternative is undeniably a positive step. Huawei has made significant advancements since the initial restrictions were imposed six years ago.

The company is now ready to explore options beyond Android by partnering with rivals like Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo, and OnePlus. This collaboration aims to inject some much-needed excitement into the smartphone market, which has become increasingly monotonous in design and functionality.

In recent years, smartphone designs have started to resemble one another, as companies have borrowed features from each other extensively. For instance, Apple has integrated Android-like features into its iOS, while the latest update of Samsung’s One UI has drawn inspiration from Apple’s design.

While some welcome these innovations, many long for a time when manufacturers were not afraid to take risks and create distinct devices. A new operating system from Xiaomi and OnePlus could reignite that creativity in the industry.

As nationalism rises, self-reliance becomes crucial for Chinese tech companies. With ongoing tensions between the US and China, these firms need to prepare for the possibility of losing access to Android.

A robust operating system can safeguard their future in the mobile market. However, creating a third mobile ecosystem is not an easy feat, as demonstrated by Huawei’s struggles with HarmonyOS.

If Xiaomi and its partners pivot away from Android, they risk alienating consumers who prefer the familiar Android experience. A potential solution could involve launching an innovative Android skin with unique features to attract and retain customers without fully abandoning the established system.

Finally, the ongoing geopolitical climate could lead to a market dominated by just Apple and Samsung if Chinese manufacturers are sidelined. This underscores the urgent need for a diverse mobile ecosystem to prevent a duopoly in the smartphone industry.
