Another Google App May Face the Axe Soon, and This One Actually Seems Justified

Posted on 29 April 2025

Google appears to be streamlining its app offerings once again, and this time, the standalone Google Play Games app could be on the chopping block. Evidence suggests that Google is integrating Play Games features into the main Google Play Store application.

This transition seems logical, particularly as users seek a unified platform for their gaming needs. Recent updates indicate that users can already track game achievements directly within the Google Play Store, marking an early step in this consolidation process.

According to Android expert @AssembleDebug, there are plans to expand this integration further. Users may soon be able to manage crucial gaming aspects without the need for a separate app.

Features such as editing gamer profiles or following friends’ gaming activities could soon be accessible directly through the Play Store. The dedicated Google Play Games app hasn’t seen any major updates or new features for some time, which fuels speculation about its potential phase-out.

By moving these functionalities into the Google Play Store, Google aims to create a central hub that combines game discovery, downloads, accomplishments, and social interactions. This approach aligns with Google’s previous efforts to consolidate services, like when the Play Movies & TV app was integrated into other parts of its ecosystem.

By reducing the number of apps users need to manage, Google not only simplifies the user experience but also eliminates unnecessary clutter on devices. While this information stems from code analysis rather than official confirmation, it does propose a sensible direction for enhancing user experience.

A consolidated Play Store would make it easier for users to access game-related features, making it a more comprehensive portal for Android gaming.
