Samsung laptop users who utilize Google’s Quick Share for file transfers should prepare for an upcoming change. Starting May 28, 2025, Samsung will assume control of the Quick Share experience on its Windows devices.
This decision allows Samsung to directly manage the file transfer capabilities for its PC and laptop users. With this transition, Google’s standalone Quick Share app will be phased out for Samsung laptops.
As per the release notes for the latest version of Google’s Quick Share app (version 1.0.2180.0), after the specified date, users attempting to use Google’s version on Samsung laptops will be prompted to download Samsung’s proprietary Quick Share application. Google has already taken steps to facilitate this change by renaming its app from “Quick Share from Google” to just “Quick Share,” ensuring that it will now be compatible with Samsung’s version.
The intent behind this shift is to create a more streamlined file-sharing experience within the Samsung ecosystem. For some time, users have encountered confusion due to the existence of two similarly named “Quick Share” apps: Google’s Nearby Share (rebranded as Quick Share) and Samsung’s own feature, which has been in use longer.
This caused complications for users trying to share files between Samsung devices and non-Samsung Android phones, as well as Windows PCs. The merger of these two experiences was previously announced in early 2024, aiming to produce a unified solution akin to Apple’s AirDrop.
This change should simplify the process of transferring files and make it easier for Samsung users to seamlessly share documents and photos between their devices, thus reducing fragmentation within the system. While adapting to a new app may take some getting used to, the overall integration should enhance the ease of use for those familiar with Samsung hardware.
