Upcoming Pixel Feature Drop May Introduce Capabilities Already Available in Galaxy S25 Ultra Devices

Posted on 29 April 2025

The upcoming Android 16 update brings excitement for Pixel users, particularly with the potential inclusion of a feature that Galaxy S25 Ultra users have enjoyed for some time. Currently, Galaxy devices allow users to double-tap the screen to both turn it on and off, a convenient functionality many appreciate. Other brands like OnePlus and Xiaomi also offer similar capabilities. In contrast, Pixel users benefit from double-tapping the screen to turn it on, but currently lack the option to double-tap again to turn it off.

The latest Android 16 beta, specifically beta 4, does not provide a setting that enables this off feature for Pixel devices. However, Android expert Mishaal Rahman has discovered a workaround. By tapping twice on a blank area of a compatible Pixel’s lock screen, users can successfully turn the display off, even though this functionality is not officially included in the beta. While my Pixel 6 Pro serves as a backup device, I prefer using the always-on display.

However, many users value extended battery life and the privacy that comes with disabling it. Disabling the always-on display can keep personal notifications hidden from prying eyes and only show them when needed. The anticipated double-tap feature would allow Pixel users to enjoy the benefits of checking notifications without compromising their personal data visibility. It is important to note that this feature is expected to roll out as part of a future Pixel Feature Drop and is unlikely to be included with the initial Android 16 release.

If this is a feature you are eager to see on your Pixel, feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.
