AT&T Customers Benefit from Features T-Mobile is Still Planning to Roll Out

Posted on 26 April 2025

AT&T users in Massachusetts are experiencing significant improvements in their cellular coverage, particularly those in Ashfield. The positive change comes after the activation of a new cell tower off Baptist Corner Road, which went live in early April, leading to more reliable service and a reduction in dropped calls. Karen Twomey, AT&T’s Senior Public Relations Manager, explained that the need for stronger network coverage has escalated as people rely more on cellular connectivity for various aspects of life.

Between 2019 and 2023, AT&T invested nearly $900 million in network upgrades across Massachusetts. This included the installation of equipment on a monopine tower, designed to resemble a pine tree, through a partnership with Blue Sky Towers. The new tower enhances not only general connectivity but also introduces Band 14 coverage to Ashfield.

Band 14 is dedicated to FirstNet, a national broadband network aimed at providing priority communication services for first responders during emergencies. This ensures that emergency personnel have reliable connectivity, even when standard cell networks are under strain. Fire Chief Kyle Walker noted improvements in cell service around the town, particularly at the Main Street fire station, where connectivity was previously inadequate.

This enhanced service allows firefighters to communicate more effectively during emergencies, sharing updates in real-time, which he described as a significant upgrade to the region’s emergency communication capabilities. Local residents have also welcomed the improvements, finding reception in areas where it was once impossible to make calls without Wi-Fi. However, it’s important to mention that, for now, only AT&T and its subsidiaries are utilizing the new tower.

While T-Mobile has expressed plans for coverage enhancements in Ashfield, no specific timeline has been announced for these developments.
