Sony Faces Backlash from Xperia Fans Over Major Misstep

Posted on 23 April 2025

Sony Xperia fans are expressing their frustration after a significant blunder from the electronics giant. Sony, known for its legacy with iconic devices like the Walkman CD player, seems unable to effectively market its smartphones.

The latest misstep has led many Xperia buyers to vow they will steer clear of Sony phones in the future. The issue arose with the release of the Xperia 1V in 2023, which boasts a stunning 4K display with a resolution of 1644 x 3840.

However, users have been disappointed as they could not control the screen resolution. The Xperia’s user interface automatically switches to 4K only when playing 4K content, reverting to a lesser resolution of 1096 x 2560 for non-4K media.

A few months ago, hope emerged when a non-functional resolution control menu appeared following the Android 15 update. This menu generated excitement among users eager for the freedom to choose a permanent 4K display.

However, as many fans would say, it was a case of false hope. Earlier this month, Sony acknowledged that the resolution settings menu was an error.

In an official notice, they confirmed, “The screen resolution settings menu is incorrectly displayed within the settings menu of the Xperia 1V smartphone.” They announced plans for a software update that will remove this menu, reverting any changes in screen resolution back to the original settings.

Although users will still be able to access 4K content in its full quality after the update, many fans voiced their dissatisfaction on social media. One user lamented that the removal of features made them reconsider investing in another Xperia device.

This incident has pushed many loyal fans over the edge, leaving them wondering about the future of Sony’s smartphone offerings.
