T-Mobile Competitor May Have Unintentionally Exposed Secrets About Its Satellite Program

Posted on 20 April 2025

Recent developments in the telecom industry have raised eyebrows, particularly regarding satellite communication services. T-Mobile, the first carrier to introduce satellite-powered texting, has made its service available to customers of AT&T and Verizon in an attempt to attract new users. However, recent statements suggest that T-Mobile may not have gained as many new subscribers as anticipated.

At an internet and telecom conference, Verizon’s Chief Revenue Officer, Frank Boulben, highlighted the company’s strengths, claiming that it has fewer white spots—areas with poor reception—compared to its competitors. He indicated that this advantage lessens the necessity for satellite services among customers. A survey by Verizon found limited demand for satellite connectivity, making the company approach the service as a supplementary option rather than a central feature.

Both Verizon and AT&T plan to introduce satellite services, beginning with messaging capabilities, with ambitions to support voice and data in the future. For now, these satellite services are free, awaiting a comprehensive rollout before any charges are implemented. However, Verizon downplays the importance of satellite services in customer retention, stating it is not a compelling reason for users to switch providers.

While T-Mobile’s direct-to-cell service remains free until July, after which charges will apply for most customers, reports suggest that T-Mobile’s offering has attracted tens of thousands of users, with a significant portion from rival networks. This discrepancy leaves uncertainty regarding the actual level of interest in satellite services. With Verizon apparently undermining the appeal of satellite features while simultaneously forming partnerships in the space, the competitive landscape between these carriers is becoming increasingly complex.
