The Google Pixel Watch 3 has recently introduced a potentially life-saving feature known as “Loss of Pulse Detection.” This new functionality, which was announced for U.S. users back in February, has officially begun its rollout following the latest software update. This feature is designed to identify when a person’s heart stops beating, and if there is no response, it will automatically contact emergency services.
This marks a significant advancement for Google’s smartwatch, reinforcing the company’s commitment to enhancing health and safety capabilities beyond mere fitness tracking. The feature had previously received FDA clearance and was launched in Europe last year. Its introduction to the U.S. market represents a notable milestone for the device.
Although the feature was anticipated for release in March, it is finally becoming available to users now. It is worth noting that the rollout might be linked to updates from the Personal Safety app, which is essential for activating this feature. To enable “Loss of Pulse Detection,” users must ensure that their Pixel Watch 3 has the Personal Safety app updated to the latest version.
Additionally, the paired smartphone should be running the Pixel Watch app version 3.4 or higher. Users can activate the feature through the companion app by navigating to “Safety & emergency” settings. This feature employs various sensors, including a heart rate monitor and an accelerometer, along with an AI-based algorithm to assess potential emergencies.
In the event of a detected loss of pulse, the watch will first attempt to alert the wearer. If there is no response, it will autonomously call emergency services, share the user’s location, and report the situation. While it is not intended for those with existing heart conditions or continuous cardiac monitoring needs, in unexpected emergencies, this feature can prove invaluable.
