Apple is making strides to ensure the iPhone 17 Air avoids the issues experienced with previous models, particularly the bending controversy associated with the iPhone 6 Plus. Recent reports indicate that the iPhone 17 Air may be the only model in the lineup to feature a titanium frame, while its siblings—the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max—are expected to stick with aluminum frames. Analyst Jeff Pu has suggested in a note to investors that the unique choice of titanium for the iPhone 17 Air may appear puzzling at first glance, particularly given titanium’s heavier nature compared to aluminum.
The design goal for the iPhone 17 Air focuses on maintaining a lightweight and thin profile, making the use of a heavier material seem counterintuitive. However, titanium is known for its strength and durability, which could serve as a safeguard against potential bending issues, echoing Apple’s past experiences with the Bendgate scandal. Interestingly, Samsung has adopted a similar approach by utilizing titanium in the Galaxy S25 Edge, which manages to stay lightweight despite the sturdier material.
The iPhone 17 Pro, on the other hand, might shift to an aluminum frame, diverging from the trend established with the stainless steel and titanium frames used in previous Pro models. This change adds a layer of intrigue for Apple’s upcoming announcement, expected in September, as the company must articulate its rationale behind the frame material shift. Moreover, there are indications that the iPhone 17 Pro models may introduce vibrant colors, which would be more feasible with an aluminum frame.
Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Air could stick to its tradition of more muted color options. As the release date approaches, it will be interesting to see how these features play out in the new models.
