T-Mobile CEO’s Ambitious 6G Predictions: Will Europe Be Part of the Vision?

Posted on 27 June 2025

Not everyone has experienced the full advantages of 5G yet, and T-Mobile is making ambitious claims about the upcoming 6G connectivity standard. This isn’t a distant prospect; according to Ulf Ewaldsson, T-Mobile’s CTO, we’re looking at the implementation of 6G by 2030.

He predicts a staggering increase in data usage, possibly 100 times more than current capabilities, as well as latency dropping to less than one millisecond and the potential for 500 billion connected devices worldwide. This advanced network, powered by artificial intelligence, would cater to individual user needs almost instantly, promising an economic value of around $10 trillion.

This vision contrasts sharply with the more cautious approach adopted by European operators as they focus on the present challenges of 5G. In the context of this technological race, China’s advances further complicate the scene.

China Mobile’s executive vice president has underscored the significance of features like integrated sensing and communication, which enables networks to understand and respond to their physical environments. China is also investing heavily in 5G-Advanced, already setting up thousands of sites to achieve impressive peak speeds.

European telecom leaders, however, are still handling the costs and intricacies tied to 5G and are hesitant to initiate another disruptive change. Many advocate that 6G should evolve from 5G rather than represent a new generation.

The competitive landscape in Europe, characterized by numerous operators in small markets, as well as strict regulations and limited consumer spending, has led to restrained investments in future technology. The divide in approaches raises concerns about Europe’s potential lag in the race for 6G.

Without a cohesive strategy between operators and regulators, Europe risks being marginal to the next generation of mobile communication, while the US and China forge ahead. The integrity of global standards is also at stake, especially as different regions pursue distinct goals, which may lead to fragmentation detrimental to the entire sector.

For now, T-Mobile stands at the forefront with its bold predictions, while Europe’s future in telecommunications hangs in the balance.
