Familiar Lock Screen Feature Unveiled in One UI 8 Update

Posted on 27 June 2025

Samsung’s One UI 8 beta introduces an innovative clock widget for the lock screen, reminiscent of iOS’s depth effect. This new clock feature automatically wraps around the faces in wallpapers, allowing for a more personalized appearance.

Additionally, users can reposition the clock on the screen, and the text dynamically adjusts based on the available space. One UI 8 will be based on Android 16 and is anticipated to launch sooner than expected, especially in conjunction with the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7, which are set to be announced on July 9.

The latest beta for the Galaxy S25 enhances the lock screen experience, enabling the clock numerals to shift and conform to central objects within the wallpaper. Previously, achieving a similar depth effect required the installation of a Good Lock module called Lockstar in One UI 7.

This often proved challenging in terms of getting the desired look. The new clock widget, however, simplifies this process, adapting seamlessly to various wallpapers and allowing easy movement across the screen.

Feedback on platforms such as X shows excitement for this feature, with beta testers highlighting its functionality in a build marked “BYFB” for the Galaxy S25 Ultra. Furthermore, prominent leaker Ice Universe has supported these claims with visuals demonstrating the clock’s dynamic nature.

For the always-on display, the font size standardizes, reverting to the depth effect when the lock screen is active. While not a groundbreaking change, this feature enhances customization for Samsung users.

Competitive with Apple’s similar lock screen clock adaptation, this development comes down to personal preference. Some users find these styles appealing, adding character to their devices, while others may find them distracting.

Ultimately, it’s great to see both brands offer users more choices to personalize their experiences.
