TikTok Plans to Separate into Two Distinct Apps for the U.S. Market

Posted on 7 July 2025

The TikTok situation is nearing resolution, as President Donald Trump has recently announced that he has “very wealthy people” poised to buy the platform. The proposed solution features the creation of a separate app for American users while the sale of the U.S. operations to a non-Chinese entity is finalized.

A report indicates that a new TikTok app is set to launch on September 5. The existing app will remain functional until March of next year, requiring new users in the U.S. to download this separate application to continue accessing TikTok.

After the shutdown of the current app, American users will be using a distinct version, separate from global users. The question of whether TikTok should be sold or banned has garnered a mix of public opinion.

A portion of the audience believes the app should be sold, while a significant segment argues for a ban. The majority, however, indicated that neither option seems necessary.

TikTok has faced persistent allegations of posing a national security threat and serving as a vehicle for Chinese propaganda. This led to the decision for the company to divest its American operations to a non-Chinese entity, or potentially face a ban.

President Trump has extended the deadline multiple times but now appears optimistic about a forthcoming deal. The introduction of a separate app may alleviate some concerns from the U.S. administration, albeit with an ironic twist, as the U.S. will have created an alternative to a globally popular app—a practice often criticized in countries like China.

For regular users, any changes might be minimal aside from needing to download a new app. However, the actual impact will largely depend on whether these wealthy investors follow through with the purchase of TikTok’s U.S. operations, leading to a future where TikTok keeps its foothold in the American market, much to the dismay of competitors like Instagram.
