Stranded at 11,000 Feet, Man Rescued Thanks to iPhone’s Satellite Texting Feature

Posted on 2 July 2025

In a remarkable instance of technology saving lives, an injured climber stranded in the Colorado wilderness was successfully rescued thanks to Apple’s satellite texting feature. The 53-year-old man had reached the summit of Snowmass Mountain but suffered a wrist injury during his descent, rendering him unable to continue alone.

Without a cell signal, he relied on the emergency satellite messaging capability of his iPhone to alert rescuers. The emergency message was received by the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office’s Emergency Dispatch Center early on Monday morning.

Seventeen rescuers from Mountain Rescue Aspen were dispatched to the challenging location, nearly 11,000 feet above sea level at Snowmass Lake. Upon arrival, they found the climber unable to walk and carried him to safety.

This incident highlights the life-saving potential of Apple’s emergency satellite texting feature, which is specifically designed for situations where there is no cellular coverage. Rescue officials emphasized the importance of having a reliable emergency device.

By enabling direct communication with rescuers, the Emergency SOS feature significantly shortens response times. While the iPhone 14 and newer models support satellite connectivity, it’s notable that certain Apple Watch models also offer safety features over cellular networks.

Devices such as the Apple Watch Series 5 and later, as well as the Apple Watch Ultra, can independently place emergency calls. Additional safety features, including Crash Detection and Fall Detection, have previously played pivotal roles in assisting individuals in distress.

Technology has advanced significantly, and features like satellite texting provide essential support in critical situations. It’s reassuring to know that, even in remote locations, there remains a means to summon help.
