Samsung DeX is receiving a fresh update alongside the rollout of Android 16’s desktop mode. First launched with the Galaxy S8 in 2017, DeX enables supported Galaxy phones to connect to external displays, offering a desktop-like interface.
The new version, built on Android’s native desktop mode introduced at Google I/O 2025, is currently available on the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7. While many of the core features remain consistent, users will notice subtle but significant changes in the DeX experience.
The updates include visual refreshes in the Quick Panel and alterations in how certain tools are accessed. Notably, the dedicated DeX tab in the Settings app has been replaced with a broader “Connected display” menu.
Moreover, the “Exit DeX” option is no longer accessible from the app drawer. A closer examination reveals additional adjustments that might impact users who heavily customize their setups.
For instance, right-click menus on the desktop and taskbar have been simplified, while some UI elements now remain visible when video applications are in full-screen mode. Additionally, the ability to pin application windows has been removed.
Despite these minor changes, which may affect a select group of users, the updated version appears more stable and contemporary than previous iterations. Comparatively, DeX still offers a more polished experience than Google’s basic desktop mode.
However, it serves a niche audience, and the subtle differences in this update might not significantly affect the broader user base. As Samsung continues to roll out One UI 8 across more devices, it will be interesting to see if the enhanced DeX experience will extend beyond the newest foldables.
