Honor is currently defending its claim that the Magic V5 is the “slimmest foldable” device on the market against the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7. The Magic V5 is marketed as being 8.8mm thick; however, a recent video comparison by leaker @UniverseIce shows that the thickness of both devices appears nearly identical. When a flat card is placed across both phones, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 seems slightly thinner, as evidenced by a small ball rolling towards the Honor device.
In response to the skepticism, Honor clarified that the 8.8mm measurement is based on internal lab testing, excluding factors such as screen protectors and the raised camera module. The company insists this method aligns with standard measurement practices in the industry. They further suggested that consumers should check the actual devices for a reliable assessment—a statement that contrasts with the comparison footage that ignited the debate.
Disputes over device measurements are not uncommon in the foldable smartphone sector, where manufacturers often present specifications under optimal conditions. Honor’s website even contains a disclaimer stating that thickness can vary due to configurations and measurement techniques. Interestingly, another comparison video suggested that the Magic V5’s profile is more akin to the Oppo Find N5 rather than outshining Samsung’s offering.
Despite the contention over thickness, the difference might be negligible for most consumers. A fraction of a millimeter may not significantly alter daily usage. However, in a marketplace that relies heavily on every detail as a key selling point, Honor’s assertion will continue to invite scrutiny.
Personally, I remain unconvinced by the industry’s fixation on thinness. While aesthetic appeal is appreciated, I prioritize functionality over looks. If being the “world’s slimmest foldable” is a priority for manufacturers, it’s crucial to establish a consistent standard for measurements to eliminate ambiguity.
