Mark Gurman, a well-known analyst and insider on Apple developments, has shared insights regarding the company’s upcoming MacBook lineup. According to his latest report, Apple is expected to release new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros, codenamed J714 and J716, later this year. These models are anticipated to feature the new M5 chip.
The launch is aimed for early next year, suggesting a prolonged release cycle for the current MacBook Pro lineup. Notably, the existing models were introduced in October of last year. Apple has typically launched its MacBook Pro models in October or November, with the notable exception of the M2 model, which debuted in January 2023.
Gurman also indicates that this upcoming MacBook Pro lineup may be the last to feature the current design, which has been in place since 2021. Future models are expected to showcase new designs and make the switch to OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screens. These displays are known for their higher contrast and have been utilized in Apple’s iPhones since 2017 and iPad Pros since 2024.
In addition, Gurman mentions the arrival of new MacBook Air models, codenamed J813 and J815, expected in the first half of next year. The current MacBook Air models were released in March this year, equipped with the M4 chip. However, there is little information available about the upcoming MacBook Airs, although Gurman hints at a new external monitor slated for early 2026.
Interestingly, Gurman’s report omits any details regarding a rumored ‘affordable’ MacBook that may utilize an A18 Pro chip, suggesting that this device will not be released alongside the new MacBooks. In summary, if Gurman’s predictions hold true, Apple appears to be strategically spacing out its product releases. This approach not only allows each new lineup to have its own prominence but also may encourage consumers to consider waiting for the redesigned models featuring OLED screens.
