Google Warns Pixel 6a Users: Some Units May Pose Fire Hazard

Posted on 27 July 2025

Google recently issued a warning regarding certain units of the Pixel 6a, indicating that they pose a fire risk. This concern was brought to light by a user who experienced a terrifying incident when his Pixel 6a caught fire while he was asleep, leading him to inhale smoke and putting his safety at serious risk. This alarming situation underscores the urgency behind Google’s decision to offer free battery replacements for affected devices. The issue is compounded by the presence of smoke and flames in a closed room, which could have resulted in dire consequences.

Coincidentally, Google had rolled out a mandatory software update aimed at throttling battery performance in specific Pixel 6a models. Without this update, the company warned that these units could overheat and potentially catch fire. As part of the update, solitary changes to the battery will occur after the phone completes 400 charging cycles. Users of affected devices may notice a decrease in battery life, charging performance, and some irregularities with battery-level indicators during recalibration.

To identify if their device is impacted, users can check their IMEI numbers. Even if deemed affected, the phone must be inspected for water damage or severe physical issues before a free battery replacement is granted. If not eligible, users might receive alternative repair options. Customers who own impacted Pixel 6a devices have until July 8, 2026, to select one of several remedies offered by Google, including a free battery replacement, a cash payment of approximately $100, or Google Store credit worth $150.

As the risks associated with the Pixel 6a become clearer, it’s critical that users act promptly to ensure their safety and that of those around them.
