Google is reportedly testing a new way to manage app downloads on the Play Store, which could lead to a more user-friendly experience. A recent APK teardown indicates that a small update will enhance the way download progress is displayed in the notification panel. The updated notification feature allows users to see up to three ongoing app downloads at a time. Instead of the previous “See more” button, users will now see a message indicating how many additional apps have been recently installed.
This adjustment makes it easier to keep track of app installations without needing to open the Play Store repeatedly. Earlier versions of this functionality faced criticism due to a confusing display, often showing “0% of 0MB,” even after downloads completed. This has now been improved with a “Recently installed” label underneath each app name, providing clarity to users. Additionally, an “Open” button allows direct launching of apps from the notification, which further streamlines usability.
The version associated with these changes is 46.8.29-31, but the update has not yet been rolled out to all users. As a result, many will have to wait for Google to distribute the update more widely in a future release. It’s essential to note that features uncovered through APK teardowns may change during development or even get canceled entirely. While these adjustments may not revolutionize the Play Store experience, they represent significant improvements, particularly for frequent app downloaders.
Such incremental updates reflect Google’s commitment to enhancing user interactions with Android, even in seemingly minor areas. For users like myself, these tweaks can make managing app downloads and updates a much smoother process.
