Google Fi is Google’s mobile service that operates on the T-Mobile network and offers several beneficial features. One notable advantage is that Google Fi does not throttle your data during peak hours, ensuring consistent speeds. It also seamlessly switches between multiple networks, keeping you connected whether you’re traveling within the United States or internationally.
Recently, Google Fi’s device protection plan changed providers from Assurant to Asurion. As of July 14, 2025, Asurion will be the new provider for devices shipped after this date. Asurion is an experienced partner that already collaborates with major carriers like Verizon and AT&T, which bodes well for Google Fi users.
The new protection plan introduces a valuable enhancement, allowing customers to file up to two claims within a rolling 12-month period for loss, theft, or physical damage (excluding New York). Previously, the limit was just one claim. The plan continues to cover two instances of accidental damage like screen cracks or spills, as well as unlimited coverage for mechanical breakdowns for devices purchased through Google Fi.
Pricing for the protection plan varies by device. For instance, insuring the latest Pixel Watch 3 costs $4 per month, while phones like the Pixel 9 Pro and Galaxy S25 Ultra are $12 and $14 per month, respectively. There is also a deductible, for example, repairing a cracked screen on the Galaxy Ultra would cost about $29.
While other carriers, such as T-Mobile, offer similar protection plans—like Protection 360 with a higher monthly fee—Google Fi’s updated plan provides solid coverage at a fair price. It may have fewer claims for loss and theft compared to T-Mobile, but for most users, having a reliable protection plan is crucial, particularly for those prone to accidents. In today’s tech-centric world, having a strong device protection plan plays an essential role, ensuring that your mobile device is covered against potential mishaps.
