Google experiments with updated designs for the Chrome app search bar on Android devices.

Posted on 20 July 2025

Google is currently experimenting with two distinct designs for the search bar in the Chrome app on Android devices. These changes come as part of an effort to better integrate a new feature known as AI Mode, which was unveiled at Google I/O earlier this year.

AI Mode aims to streamline the search experience by allowing users with complex queries to access information without sifting through numerous search results. This innovation is a strategic response to the increasing competition from various AI applications that challenge Google’s search dominance.

In this testing phase, Google has moved the Lens shortcut and voice search icons away from the search bar, positioning them below it. This modification allows a shortcut for AI Mode to be prominently placed within the search bar, ensuring it is easily accessible to users.

Additionally, Google has updated the text within the search bar from “Search or type URL” to “Search Google or type URL,” further emphasizing its branding. The second design variant under testing introduces a shortcut for incognito mode, represented by an icon reminiscent of Walter White from “Breaking Bad.”

In this iteration, the “G” logo is removed from the search bar, and the previous wording is reinstated. Both designs were discovered in the beta version 139.0.7258.32 of the Chrome browser for Android.

As of now, these redesigned search bars are not available on all devices; for instance, users on Pixel 6 Pro running earlier versions of the app cannot see these changes. Ultimately, Google intends to replace the existing search bar with one of the new designs to enhance user engagement with AI Mode and reinforce its position in the competitive search market.
