Google Compels Pixel 4a Users to Download an Update That Harms Battery Performance

Posted on 22 July 2025

Google is mandating that Pixel 4a users install a contentious software update, aggravating many who’ve attempted to avoid it. Recently, numerous users reported on Reddit that their phones received this update, which was pushed automatically despite efforts to disable such functions. Within the last 48 hours, these devices prompted users to replace their batteries due to the changes made by the update.

In attempts to circumvent this situation, some Pixel 4a users engaged the Developer Option, which allowed them to prevent automatic installations after the device rebooted. This method was effective for months, sustaining normal functionality. However, Google managed to override this setting, leaving many puzzled about how it occurred.

The question arises: is Google trying to render the Pixel 4a obsolete? While the answer is no, the situation is complex. Earlier this year, an unexpected update drastically reduced the battery capacity of certain Pixel 4a devices.

Accompanying this change, Google announced a free battery replacement initiative for affected users. The reaction was understandably negative as many attempted to reverse the update, which became increasingly challenging due to Google’s removal of older firmware from their repositories. It was later revealed that Google’s actions stemmed from genuine safety concerns.

The Pixel 4a batteries had issues that could lead to overheating, posing potential fire hazards. Thus, this update was part of an effort to mitigate such risks. While it’s frustrating for users, the ongoing offering of battery replacements signifies the company’s commitment to addressing the issue.

For those still using a Pixel 4a, considering a battery replacement or looking into alternative devices may be prudent.
