Total Wireless has launched its first-ever social impact program, called Total Spark, aiming to support working students as they navigate both education and employment. This initiative is part of the Verizon Value portfolio and is specifically focused on addressing the unique challenges faced by students who work either full-time or part-time while pursuing their studies.
The company conducted a comprehensive survey of over 1,000 adult students in the U.S. to understand their needs better. The findings revealed some concerning statistics: 32% of these students depend on their jobs to support their families, while the same percentage relies on government subsidy programs.
Additionally, an overwhelming 89% of working students are burdened by student loans. Most notably, 73% expressed a desire for more support in their career paths, with mentorship being highlighted as a crucial service.
Time management emerged as a significant hurdle, with only one in ten students feeling they have enough free time to balance their studies and work. Interestingly, 90% of working students view mobile phones as vital tools for maintaining connections at work and during their job searches.
To enhance the effectiveness of Total Spark, Total Wireless has partnered with Empower Work, a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing the highlighted issues from the survey. Total Wireless is providing grants of $50,000 to $150,000 to five nonprofit organizations in Chicago, Dallas, and Detroit that support working students through job training and career development initiatives.
As part of the program’s launch, Total Wireless is hosting a “Career Spark” Fair in Chicago on June 27, offering resources for student well-being and career growth. Attendees will have access to workshops, community resources, and networking opportunities while enjoying various activities, with an open invitation for all working students in the area.
