The wild tri-fold smartphone we received last year is set to release its sequel.

Posted on 6 June 2025

The world’s first tri-fold smartphone, the Huawei Mate XT, is set to receive a successor with notable upgrades in both chipset and camera technology. Launched in September 2024, the Mate XT captured significant attention for its unique design and innovative functionality, earning Huawei a spot in the spotlight of tech media. Consumer interest in the original device prompted Huawei to explore further development of this unconventional form factor. Reports from credible sources reveal that the company is currently working on a second-generation Mate XT, with plans to unveil it in the latter half of 2025.

While the successor will maintain the same display technology as its predecessor, improvements are expected in processing power and camera quality. Additionally, enhancements to accessories for the new device are in the works, though specifics about these upgrades remain unclear. The original Mate XT already featured intriguing accessories, including a special rotating case made from durable aramid fiber, capable of rotating 270 degrees. This case serves dual purposes, allowing users to watch content hands-free and affording added functionality when paired with a foldable touch keyboard, effectively transforming the smartphone into a mini PC.

As Huawei prepares for the launch of its next tri-fold smartphone, observers are eager to see what new accessories will be released to complement the device. The anticipated upgrades to chipset and camera reflect a broader trend among major smartphone manufacturers, but the key point remains that Huawei is committed to advancing this technology. There is also hope that the upcoming Mate XT will be available in a wider array of markets, extending beyond China and a select few countries.
