Revive Your Old Backup Phone with Free 5G Service from T-Mobile’s MVNO: Here’s How!

Posted on 4 June 2025

Revitalize your unused backup phone by taking advantage of a free 5G service offered by a T-Mobile MVNO, Helium Mobile. This is an ideal opportunity to bring that dust-collecting device back into action. As someone who frequently toggles between a Google Pixel and an iPhone, I’ve found myself using my Pixel 6 Pro as a backup device while still being connected to Wi-Fi. Even though it was initially set to lose Android support, I recently upgraded to Android 16 QPR 1 Beta 1, which significantly improved the phone’s performance.

Despite these enhancements, I wasn’t ready to fully switch back from my iPhone, nor did I want to pay for an extra line. That’s when I discovered Helium Mobile. Offering the nation’s first free 5G plan, Helium’s Zero Plan provides 3GB of data, 100 minutes of calls, 300 texts, and 5GB of hotspot data at absolutely no cost. Signing up on my Pixel took just five minutes, and I received a new phone number instantly.

This meant that I could take my Pixel on the go without worrying about data costs, while still primarily using it at home over Wi-Fi. Helium utilizes T-Mobile’s nationwide 5G network, offering reliable speeds, even if it doesn’t reach the higher speeds associated with T-Mobile’s Ultra Capacity service. So far, my experience with the 5G connection has been positive, allowing for smooth calling and decent data speeds. In addition to the free Zero Plan, Helium offers other options for those wanting more data.

Given that Helium no longer requires an invitation to join, now is the perfect time to explore turning that forgotten device into a fully functional smartphone once again.
