Major Upgrades Coming Soon for Two Apple Watch Models, One of Which is Long Overdue

Posted on 30 June 2025

Apple is gearing up to refresh two of its smartwatch models: the premium Apple Watch Ultra and the more budget-friendly Apple Watch SE. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, both devices are expected to hit the market later this year, introducing significant updates that are highly anticipated. The most noteworthy enhancements are set for the Apple Watch Ultra 3.

Gurman previously reported that this model may introduce satellite messaging capabilities, enabling users to send short texts even when they are out of cellular or Wi-Fi range. This feature would make the Ultra a more independent device, especially appealing for outdoor enthusiasts, athletes, and those venturing into remote areas. Since its initial launch in 2022, the Apple Watch Ultra has seen only minor upgrades, such as the addition of a new chip and a black titanium option.

The addition of satellite connectivity could serve as a compelling reason for current owners to consider an upgrade, as well as provide Apple with a key selling point for its fall product lineup. Simultaneously, Apple is expected to update the Apple Watch SE, which targets those who desire smartwatch functionality without the advanced features offered in the Ultra or Series models. The current SE model has not seen updates since 2022, making a refresh overdue.

While specific details remain scarce, improvements in chip performance, battery life, and minor design alterations could be on the horizon. These potential upgrades arrive at a time when Apple’s wearables division is experiencing a slowdown, with a 7% decline in revenue last fiscal year. The Apple Watch alone suffered a more than 14% drop, raising concerns about future sales.

Should satellite messaging be implemented, Apple would position itself as a trailblazer in the consumer smartwatch sector, potentially attracting adventure seekers and fitness aficionados who prioritize reliable off-grid communication. It’s promising to see Apple redirecting attention to its smartwatch lineup, particularly after a period of minimal innovations. A more capable Ultra model and an updated SE have the potential to attract new customers and revive interest in Apple’s wearables.

The real challenge will be ensuring these new features deliver practical value for everyday users while maintaining the reliability and quality associated with the brand.
