Recent rumors suggest that the upcoming Snapdragon X2 Elite chipset for laptops might support up to 64GB of RAM and feature as many as 18 CPU cores. If accurate, this would enhance the capabilities and versatility of ARM-based laptops for consumers.
The official announcement for the Snapdragon X2 Elite and X2 Plus processors is anticipated during the Snapdragon Summit in September, where Qualcomm will also unveil its next-generation smartphone processor. Currently, ARM-powered laptops are somewhat limited in RAM capacity, maxing out at 32GB with the existing Snapdragon X Elite.
The new X2 Elite chipset is expected to allow configurations of up to 64GB, significantly broadening options for users. This information has been shared by reliable leaker Roland Quandt, indicating a promising development in ARM technology.
In addition to increased RAM support, reports indicate that Qualcomm is testing an X2 Elite variant with 18 CPU cores. The current Snapdragon X Elite includes only 12 cores, so this upgrade would mark a substantial leap in processing power.
Furthermore, the X2 Plus chip is on the horizon as the successor to the Snapdragon X Plus and is also set for announcement at the Snapdragon Summit this September. The rising trend of ARM-powered laptops gained traction after Apple moved away from Intel’s x86 chips to its ARM-based Apple Silicon.
Qualcomm has long provided ARM processors for Microsoft Surface devices, but its Snapdragon X series is paving the way for a wider market presence, with brands like Lenovo, HP, and Acer already offering Snapdragon X-powered laptops. ARM chipsets are smaller, enabling lighter laptop designs while eliminating the need for fans, resulting in quieter operation.
Additionally, they are more efficient regarding battery life – a crucial aspect for portable devices.
