Google has introduced a new feature for managing notifications in the Gmail app on Android devices. This enhancement allows users to mark emails as “read” directly from the notification without having to open the app.
The “Mark as read” option will appear next to existing actions like Delete and Reply, making it easier to manage your inbox quickly and efficiently. This feature is currently being tested and may not be available to all users yet.
Some, like X subscriber Kurt Gomez, have already noticed its presence on their devices. However, those using Gmail for Android version 2025.06.15, like myself on the Pixel 6 Pro, may not see the update yet.
It’s worth mentioning that iOS users have already had access to this feature, indicating a gradual rollout across platforms. For those who haven’t received the update on their Android devices, there is a workaround.
You can download an app called AutoNotification from the Play Store, which allows customization of Gmail notifications, including adding the “Mark as read” option. This can help you regain some control over how you deal with incoming messages while minimizing distractions.
Currently, Gmail notifications by default provide options to Reply, Archive, or Delete emails. To adjust these settings on your Android device, go to the Gmail app, tap the Hamburger menu, and navigate to Settings > General Settings > Default email notification action.
There, you can choose whether to Archive or Delete as your secondary action. While the addition of a “Mark as read” feature may seem minor, it represents a significant efficiency boost for users looking to manage their inbox swiftly.
Once the update becomes available on more devices, further details will be shared.
