Google Photos Update Transforms the Editing Process for HDR Images

Posted on 27 June 2025

Google Photos recently received an update that significantly enhances the editing process for both HDR (High Dynamic Range) and SDR (Standard Dynamic Range) images. This update aims to ensure that users retain more original detail in their photos after editing, particularly with HDR images. One of the key features is the preservation of HDR metadata and full dynamic range even after editing with tools such as Photo Unblur, Magic Eraser, or Portrait Light. This enhancement allows the contrast and brightness to remain accurate after modifications, a change that previously saw some loss of detail.

Additionally, Google introduced a new tool named “Ultra HDR,” which gives users the ability to adjust the brightness of images. The existing “HDR” slider has been renamed to “Tone,” which better describes its function in regulating contrast and exposure. These updates aim to simplify the editing process for those looking to perfect their photos. A standout feature is the ability to enhance SDR images to resemble HDR.

Utilizing machine learning, this function boosts highlights, enhances contrast, and improves clarity for older photos or those not originally shot in HDR. While it does not convert SDR images into true HDR files, the outcome is designed to be more vibrant on screens that support HDR. When compared to the Photos app on iOS, Google’s approach provides greater manual control. While Apple preserves HDR metadata, its editing tools are more limited, and conversion from SDR to HDR is not possible.

Consequently, Google’s updates offer users increased flexibility in achieving their desired photo appearance. These changes mark a shift towards integrating AI into mobile photo editing, particularly for Pixel device users. While tools like Magic Editor intend to transform images significantly, this HDR update focuses on maintaining photo quality through minor edits. Overall, the update expands options without altering the app’s fundamental functionality, allowing for enhanced results, especially for users with HDR-capable displays.
