Google Messages has incorporated RCS (Rich Communication Services) for several years, but previously it lacked an easy way to identify which contacts support this feature. That is now changing, as many users are beginning to see RCS badges next to contacts who have it enabled. These badges can be found in the contact list that appears after the “start chat” button is tapped.
Currently, this update is not universally available; it appears to be part of the latest beta version (20250527_01_RC00). However, the rollout suggests that a wider release may be imminent. With the new RCS badge in place, users can quickly determine which contacts support RCS, improving the overall messaging experience.
Prior to this enhancement, users had to initiate a chat to figure out if a contact had RCS, by checking whether the message field indicated “RCS message” or “Text message.” This process was far from ideal. For those unfamiliar, RCS offers enhanced messaging features like typing indicators, read receipts, higher-quality image sharing, group chat support, and end-to-end encryption for added privacy.
RCS messages are also transmitted over mobile data or Wi-Fi, bypassing the limitations of SMS. This allows for faster messaging and richer content sharing, all while being effectively free, though users should note that data costs may still apply based on their mobile plans. The addition of RCS badges greatly simplifies message sending by allowing users to quickly identify which contacts can receive RCS messages.
With Google refining the chat interface to clearly mark RCS support, it seems poised to become a default feature across all Android devices soon.
