AT&T Plans Significant Job Cuts in Alabama: Layoffs Expected Within Three Months

Posted on 27 June 2025

AT&T is set to lay off numerous employees in Alabama, with the reductions scheduled to begin on September 20. The company recently filed a WARN notice indicating that over 70 employees in Huntsville will be affected. This advance notice complies with the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, which mandates that employers with more than 100 full-time employees provide at least 60 days’ notice before significant layoffs.

The context surrounding these layoffs reflects a broader trend within the telecommunications industry. Companies are increasingly looking to artificial intelligence (AI) as a means to streamline operations and enhance efficiency. While it’s not explicitly stated that the layoffs in Alabama are directly due to AI, the potential for technology to replace certain jobs is a growing concern.

In the UK, BT Group, one of the largest telecom companies, is considering considerable workforce reductions as it integrates AI into its operations. Currently employing nearly 99,000 people, BT plans to cut its workforce by at least 40,000 by 2030, with the possibility of even further reductions. CEO Allison Kirkby has indicated that the efficiency gains from AI could lead to expedited job cuts, following an earlier announcement in 2023 about potentially reducing up to 55,000 positions, including contractors.

As stated by an AT&T spokesperson, workforce reduction is a difficult decision that the company approaches with great caution. They emphasize that every effort will be made to minimize layoffs through attrition and voluntary departures. For those affected, AT&T plans to offer severance pay, benefits, and outplacement services to assist with the transition.

Given the trends in the telecom industry, it’s reasonable to speculate that such job cuts may not be isolated incidents, but rather part of a larger pattern as companies adapt to technological advancements.
