Apple’s iPhone 17 Air Might Exclude a Beloved Upgrade, According to Reuters AP Newsletters

Posted on 6 June 2025

Rumors surrounding the iPhone 17 series have been circulating for quite some time, even though it is still early in the development stage. Apple is known for its ability to keep product details under wraps, resulting in a mix of conflicting information.

One emerging rumor suggests that the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air will not feature ProMotion display technology. Interestingly, while both may retain a 120Hz refresh rate, they are expected to lack the adaptive capabilities that characterize Pro models.

ProMotion displays typically offer a 120Hz refresh rate but have the unique ability to adjust the refresh rate dynamically, dropping to as low as 1Hz to conserve battery life. This adaptability is what allows Pro models to incorporate an always-on display feature.

In contrast, the iPhone 17 Air is likely to have a standard 120Hz refresh rate, providing smooth scrolling and fluid animations, but it may miss out on the always-on capability that Pro users appreciate. Expected to replace the traditional ‘Plus’ model, the iPhone 17 Air may feature a redesigned look with a camera island reminiscent of Google’s Pixel series.

One of its standout attributes is an incredibly slim profile, estimated to be around 5.5mm. However, there are some concerns regarding its battery capacity, as leaks indicate it might be smaller than desired.

While sleek aesthetics may attract buyers, it raises questions about the practicality of such extreme thinness, especially if users will cover the device with a case. As the iPhone 17 Air prepares to face off against the Galaxy S25 Edge, which is similarly styled, it is uncertain if it can achieve strong sales, especially given the disappointing performance implied by Samsung’s recent sales figures.

If rumors about the lack of ProMotion are accurate, many may see this as a setback, particularly since ProMotion could contribute to better battery efficiency. Ultimately, Apple may be positioning its Pro models as the more attractive option for those seeking enhanced features.
