Android Brands Embrace Under-Display Cameras After Apple’s 2027 Implementation

Posted on 20 June 2025

Recent reports suggest that Apple is developing a new iPhone Pro model in time for the 20th anniversary of the iPhone in 2027. This forthcoming iPhone, likely dubbed the iPhone 20, aims to feature a distraction-free display with no bezels, as the screen will seamlessly curve backward at the edges. It appears that Apple intends to introduce the iPhone 18 first, which will include a punch hole camera, while housing the Face ID functionality beneath the display. This shift in design raises concerns that Apple may be straying from its unique identity, a trend that could start with the iPhone 17.

Interestingly, it seems major Android manufacturers are also aiming to incorporate under-display cameras by 2027. If industry giants like Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Honor, and Huawei are indeed exploring this technology, there may be a significant advancement in camera quality in the works. Currently, under-display cameras lag behind traditional cameras in terms of image quality. For instance, the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7 will not feature an under-display camera at all.

This raises questions: Is there a breakthrough in under-display technology imminent, or are manufacturers simply trying to keep pace with their competitors? As someone who has long disliked the presence of notches and punch holes on screens, the prospect of phones with completely distraction-free displays is exciting. This, coupled with the need for better batteries, should be a priority for smartphone manufacturers. While the iPhone 18 may not resemble a classic Apple product, the iPhone 20 and its contemporaries certainly have my interest piqued.

In conclusion, the advancements in under-display camera technology remain to be seen, but the future promises a shift toward sleeker, more immersive device designs.
