Android 16 QPR beta update leads to Pixel crashes if specific feature isn’t disabled.

Posted on 25 June 2025

Google has released the Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2.1 update, but users should be cautious as it is causing Pixel phones to crash unless a specific feature is disabled. This latest beta update is part of the quarterly platform release, which will be formally launched as the Pixel Feature Drop in September. If you have a compatible device, such as the Pixel 6 or newer, you can install this update by navigating to Settings, then System, followed by Software updates. Additionally, a Google Play system update is available and should be applied after installing the QPR beta.

This new beta version, labeled BP31.250523.010, brings several fixes for issues reported on Pixel phones, including visibility problems with the “Approve” button in Device Admin settings, sound toggles malfunctioning on the lock screen, and inconsistencies with the Android back button. Notably, there is also a serious bug that causes the Pixel Launcher to crash when swiping up. Despite the inclusion of the June 5, 2025 Security Update, notable problems remain, particularly with the back button and the swiping function, which is essential for accessing the Pixel Launcher. Reports indicate that users are experiencing regular crashes post-update, with devices overheating significantly.

The primary culprit behind these crashes appears to be the Identity Check feature. Users are advised to disable this feature if they’ve upgraded to the new beta. Identity Check requires biometric authentication for sensitive actions when outside of designated “trusted places,” such as home or work. To turn off Identity Check, head to Settings, tap on your name, go to All services, navigate to theft protection, and ensure that the Identity Check option is toggled off.
