Pixel Phones Introducing Long-Awaited Utility Feature That iPhones Have Offered for Years

Posted on 25 May 2025

Pixel users will soon enjoy an easier way to adjust flashlight brightness. Google is developing a native brightness slider to be incorporated directly into the flashlight Quick Settings tile. This feature is set to roll out with Android 16 QPR1, which is currently undergoing beta testing. Although Android has supported flashlight brightness control since the introduction of Android 13, this functionality has primarily been restricted to specific applications, including the Camera and Magnifier.

As a result, Pixel users were unable to modify flashlight intensity directly from the system interface and had to rely on third-party applications for full brightness control. However, this is set to change with the new feature uncovered in the Android 16 QPR1 testing phase. This update will introduce a redesigned flashlight tile that includes an integrated brightness slider. When using the wider version of the tile, tapping the right side reveals the brightness menu.

Alternatively, for the smaller version, a long press will provide access to the same menu. In either case, the flashlight will activate instantly, allowing users to adjust the brightness level on the spot, with the current intensity displayed as a percentage on the screen. Once this feature is live, it will align Pixel phones more closely with the iPhone experience, which has offered flashlight brightness adjustments through the Control Center for some time. Many Android users have anticipated incorporating this functionality into the system, and Google is finally addressing that demand.

While the flashlight slider isn’t available in the first beta of Android 16 QPR1, it represents a small yet meaningful enhancement that aims to refine the Pixel experience based on user feedback. Currently, this feature remains hidden within the code, and it’s uncertain whether it will be available on other Android devices. For Pixel owners, however, it represents a valuable addition that enhances a fundamental tool. If enrolled in the Android beta program, users may notice its arrival soon.
