The recent update to Android 16 QPR 1 beta 1 has drastically changed my perception of the Pixel 6 Pro. While I’ve often favored iPhones since I first got the original iPhone in 2007, my journey with Android has been extensive, starting with the Motorola DROID in 2009.
This era was exciting for smartphone enthusiasts, with rapid advancements and new models emerging frequently. One of the standout phones I owned was the HTC DROID DNA.
When it faced issues, HTC surprised me by sending a One (M8) as a replacement. The One M8 impressed me with its solid aluminum build and excellent front-facing stereo BoomSound speakers.
Later, I moved on to the Pixel 2 XL, which also delivered an extraordinary experience. The initial allure of the Pixel 6 series drew me in, but I encountered several bugs post-launch, including a frustrating under-display fingerprint scanner and inconsistent 5G connectivity.
Eventually, I became disillusioned and returned to the iPhone 11 Pro Max, and later the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The Pixel 6 Pro seemed destined for the drawer, especially as it was slated to lose support after Android 15.
However, news of this model receiving Android 16 support reignited my interest. After the beta update, my Pixel 6 Pro felt rejuvenated.
While still limited by the original Tensor application processor, the user interface saw significant improvements. For instance, the “Clear all” button for notifications is now centrally located and easier to tap, which enhances usability.
Performance has also improved, making scrolling smoother despite occasional lags, though battery life remains a concern. The update introduces new sounds and a fresh volume slider look, along with fun features like animated weather wallpapers.
Overall, the Pixel 6 Pro is proving to be a surprisingly enjoyable device, reminding me that perhaps the grass truly is greener on this side of the smartphone spectrum.
