Rumors are circulating about a potential significant camera upgrade for future iPhones, with information from well-known leaker “Digital Chat Station.” According to their statement, Apple is currently testing a 200 MP sensor, indicating a possible shift in the company’s approach to iPhone cameras. Historically, Apple tends to integrate new technologies gradually into its devices. Presently, the iPhone cameras utilize 48MP sensors, which deliver impressive photo quality.
However, the introduction of a 200MP sensor could elevate the iPhone camera experience to new heights, even if the timeline for such an upgrade remains unclear. Digital Chat Station posted about the sensor test on the Chinese platform Weibo but did not specify which iPhone model the sensor is being tested for or when it may be launched. There is also uncertainty regarding the manufacturer of the new sensor, but Samsung emerges as a strong contender. Samsung’s flagship devices, including the Galaxy S25 Ultra, already feature 200MP cameras, making them a likely supplier for this potential upgrade due to their established presence in Apple’s supply chain.
It is important to note that testing a sensor does not guarantee its inclusion in upcoming iPhone models. Nevertheless, as the smartphone market evolves, it seems plausible that Apple will eventually incorporate higher-resolution cameras into its devices. Currently, the iPhone 16 Pro has 48MP sensors for its main and ultra-wide cameras, while its telephoto lens remains at 12MP. For the upcoming iPhone 17 series, rumors suggest an upgrade for the front-facing camera from 12 to 24MP.
While Samsung already offers 200MP main cameras in their premium models, true image quality stems from factors beyond megapixels, such as software optimization and optics. Thus, while a 200MP camera in a future iPhone is possible, the timing is still uncertain.
