Google has introduced a redesigned Google Search widget for Android devices that includes a customizable shortcut icon. This updated widget presents a fresh look and additional functionality compared to its predecessor. Previously, the Search widget featured a pill-shaped design with the Google “G” logo on the left, a search shortcut, and a microphone icon for voice input on the right. The new design maintains a similar search bar style while adding a separate circle on the right side for users to choose their own custom shortcut.
The updated Google Search widget incorporates the familiar “G” logo on the left, which opens the Google app when tapped. The microphone icon remains toward the right, with Google Lens closing the container. The noticeable change is the additional circle for a custom shortcut, giving users flexibility to personalize the widget. Unlike the previous version, this new widget is slightly thicker, now configured in a 4 x 1 layout as opposed to the 3 x 1 configuration.
To customize the shortcut icon, users can long-press the widget and select the pencil icon that appears. This takes them to a menu where they can pick from various themes such as System, Light, Dark, Device, and Custom. The shortcut options available include features like Translate, Song Search, Weather, Sports, Finance, and more. It is important to note that this is specifically for the Google Search widget and not the Pixel Launcher search bar.
Currently, there are no indications that the new design will extend to the Pixel Launcher. This widget is part of the version 16.19 update of the Google app for Android, and users may need to initiate a Force Stop if they do not see it immediately. To add the widget, simply long-press on the Home Screen, select Widgets, and find the Google Search widget to begin customizing your search experience.
