Apple is expanding its Self Service Repair Program to include iPads, enabling users to access genuine parts and tools for at-home repairs. Initially launched in April 2022 for iPhones, this program was later extended to Macs. As of May 29, select iPad models will now allow users to perform repairs on their own devices for the first time. The program provides a variety of official Apple parts, tools, and manuals for supported iPad models.
Key components available include batteries, displays, cameras, and charging ports. Users will also benefit from troubleshooting resources and guided repair sessions to facilitate the process. The eligible iPad models for home repairs include the iPad Air (M2 and newer), iPad Pro (M4), iPad mini (A17 Pro), and iPad (A16). As part of the initiative, users are required to return the replaced “core” part to Apple for credit towards their purchase, a move aimed at promoting recycling and reducing waste.
With this development, the Self Service Repair Program now covers a total of 65 Apple products across various lines, allowing customers to extend the lifespan of their devices while upholding safety and reliability standards. Brian Naumann, Apple’s Vice President of AppleCare, expressed enthusiasm for this expansion, highlighting the company’s commitment to creating durable products. While the self-repair process may not be the easiest or cheapest option for every user, it provides a valuable choice for those comfortable with repairs. Additionally, Apple is set to launch the Self Service Repair program in Canada later this summer, bringing the total number of countries to 34.
This update offers tech-savvy individuals a legitimate pathway to fix their iPads at home, without voiding warranties or using third-party components.
