New Google Maps UI for Android Allows Users to View Maps in Background Without Restrictions

Posted on 28 April 2025

Google Maps has evolved significantly over the years, consistently enhancing its user experience to maintain its status as a leading navigation app. Today, the app does much more than simply guide users from point A to point B.

It also assists in finding accommodations, restaurants, entertainment venues, and even late-night coffee spots. Recently, Google introduced a noteworthy update to the Google Maps interface on Android devices.

Nearly a year ago, the app switched from full-screen displays to sheets with rounded corners, improving usability by allowing users to view information while still having access to the underlying map. Following this trend, the “You” and “Contribute” tabs are now adopting the same sheet design, further streamlining the interface.

This new design provides several benefits. By displaying information in sheets rather than full-coverage pages, the app appears cleaner and less cluttered, promoting a more consistent look.

Users can easily navigate their personal lists, including favorite places and saved trips, through the “You” tab. Meanwhile, the “Contribute” tab simplifies managing user contributions, such as reviews and photos.

The updated UI began rolling out with version 25.16.06 of Google Maps for Android. Users have already reported seeing the changes across various devices, including those running Android Beta 4.

Importantly, this new interface will eventually extend to iOS and iPadOS users. One of the most notable advantages of the updated design is the ease of switching between content and the map.

Instead of being forced to backtrack to view the map, users can simply swipe down to reveal it in the background. This subtle yet impactful change demonstrates Google’s commitment to continually improving Google Maps for all of its users.
