A recent report from Counterpoint Research highlights a significant trend in the tech market: Apple has experienced remarkable success in MacBook shipments during the first quarter of 2025, surpassing the overall growth of the PC market. Preliminary data shows that the entire PC market expanded by 6.7% in this period, with all major manufacturers reporting increases in their shipment figures. Apple leads the pack with an impressive 17% growth in unit shipments compared to the same quarter last year.
This surge is likely attributed to companies speeding up their shipments to avoid new US tariffs anticipated for later in the year. Temporary exemptions on certain electronics tariffs have incentivized manufacturers to accelerate deliveries. However, it’s important to note that the rise in shipped units does not necessarily indicate higher sales or that these products are already in the hands of end users.
Many of the shipped products may still remain in inventory for the foreseeable future. Contributing to Apple’s shipping success is the launch of the new M4-powered MacBook Air in March, although the report cautions against assuming that consumer interest in AI technology is behind the shipment increase. Additionally, Apple’s share of global PC shipments has risen from 9% in the first quarter of last year to 10% in the past quarter.
Lenovo, despite strong competition, continues to hold the largest market share and has also recorded significant shipment growth of 11%, positioning itself as the second-fastest growing vendor behind Apple. This evolving landscape in tech shipment trends underscores the dynamic nature of the PC market as vendors adapt to new challenges and opportunities.
