Apple is currently developing a new model for the iPhone 17 series, known as the iPhone 17 Air. However, industry expert Mark Gurman has expressed in his newsletter, Power On, that this model may not achieve significant sales milestones. He believes that most consumers are still likely to prefer the Pro version.
The challenge of making a fourth variant in Apple’s flagship line appealing has persisted over the years. While the base model captures budget-conscious buyers, the Pro model attracts those interested in advanced features, and the Pro Max appeals to consumers who prioritize larger sizes. Unfortunately, previous attempts to introduce alternative models, like the iPhone mini, resulted in disappointing sales.
The mini underperformed, leading Apple to replace it with the iPhone Plus, which has also struggled to capture consumer interest. In an effort to change this trend, Apple is targeting a demographic that values aesthetics with the iPhone 17 Air. This upcoming model is expected to be ultra-slim by contemporary standards, and while it may carry a higher price than the Plus model it replaces, it aims to offer a sleek, elegant design based on leaked information.
Although some believe the Air could be Apple’s best attempt at a fourth model, Gurman predicts it will not surpass the popularity of the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max. He anticipates that while the Air will likely outperform past models like the mini and Plus, it will still fall short against the more premium offerings. Apple isn’t alone in this slimness trend; Samsung is also expected to launch the Galaxy S25 Edge soon.
The success of these slim devices will hinge on advancements in battery technology to ensure longevity despite reduced space.
