I Decided to Leave My Grandfathered T-Mobile Magenta Plan — Here’s Why I Have No Regrets

Posted on 7 April 2025

I recently decided to abandon my grandfathered T-Mobile Magenta plan, and I can honestly say I’m not regretting it. T-Mobile has been making it increasingly difficult for long-time customers to maintain their older, cheaper plans. This was compounded by a recent price adjustment that added $5 per line to many legacy plans, compelling me to search for alternatives. After thorough research, I opted for a prepaid MVNO plan at just $35 a month.

While I did lose a couple of perks like Netflix with ads and T-Mobile Tuesdays, I feel that I came out ahead overall. T-Mobile isn’t the only carrier pushing users off legacy plans; other major players like AT&T and Verizon have also implemented price hikes and plan updates in recent years. The trend appears to be a push towards modernization, which often results in higher costs for the same service—something that can be quite frustrating. The reality is that if you’re on a family plan with multiple lines, the recent price increases can lead to significant monthly bills without any additional benefits.

Reflecting on my experience, my Magenta plan once seemed like a good deal. It included desirable features such as free Netflix and international data. However, many of those perks had lost their appeal over time. I found that I no longer utilized T-Mobile Tuesdays, and the Netflix benefit wasn’t a dealbreaker.

With the recent increase, the plan felt less viable, leading me to explore alternatives. Now, I pay a predictable $35 a month for services that meet my basic requirements like messaging and streaming. While I’ve sacrificed some perks, the peace of mind that comes from a lower, stable bill has proven more important than any flashy features. If you’re still on a legacy plan and noticing rising costs, it might be worth reassessing your options.
