FirstNet by AT&T Expands Coverage, Now Connecting Approximately 60 Empire State Buildings’ Worth of Area

Posted on 1 April 2025

AT&T’s FirstNet has made significant strides in expanding coverage for first responders across the United States. Over the past year, the network has added 20,000 square miles of terrestrial wireless coverage, which is double the area of New Jersey. This expansion brings the total coverage of the public safety network to nearly 3 million square miles, making it one of the most extensive networks in the country.

Furthermore, AT&T ensures that its coverage exceeds that of competitor networks by approximately 250,000 square miles. The network operates in partnership with the First Responder Network Authority, incorporating various solutions for macro coverage, including in-building and mobile technologies. These solutions are essential for maintaining connectivity for public safety and critical services, such as utilities and healthcare facilities.

AT&T has emphasized the importance of reliable communication, especially in challenging indoor environments like basements and stairwells. To address these issues, AT&T has introduced FirstNet MegaRange coverage solutions, boasting advanced routers that provide up to six times the signal power of other carriers. These high-power user equipment (HPUE) routers are designed for fixed, portable, and in-vehicle use, improving coverage and uplink speeds.

Additionally, AT&T has distributed thousands of Cell Booster Pros to first responder agencies, facilitating better communication capabilities. A recent testimonial from Chief Jeffrey Ackerman of the Town of Duck Police Department underscores the value of FirstNet during emergencies, highlighting its reliability in remote areas following Hurricane Helene. AT&T is also exploring cellular connectivity from space through collaborations with firms like AST SpaceMobile, further enhancing its offerings for first responders.

The combination of these advancements solidifies FirstNet’s commitment to supporting public safety professionals.
