Android users now have the option to utilize Apple Maps for navigating their journeys. This development follows reports from last August indicating that Apple was working on an Android version of its mapping application. With Apple Maps previously limited to Apple devices, reaching out to Android users opens up new potential for interaction with the app.
Additionally, last year, Apple launched a beta version of Apple Maps for desktop and tablet browsers, although it had not yet been available on mobile browsers for Android devices. Recently, Apple has removed the beta status from the web version of Apple Maps and added support for mobile browsers on Android. This means that users can now access Apple Maps via their Chrome browser on Android phones, allowing them to navigate easily from one location to another.
Nevertheless, it’s likely that many Android users will continue to prefer Google Maps, which is a default application on their devices. For iPhone users, the availability of the web version of Apple Maps on Safari might not be particularly significant. Apple Maps is already a native app on iOS, easily accessible through the App Store if deleted.
With this update, both iPhone and Android users can choose between Google Maps and Apple Maps when planning their routes. The web version of Apple Maps has recently introduced the Look Around feature, comparable to Google Maps’ Street View, which provides 360-degree views of selected locations. However, it’s important to note that this web version lacks some functionalities found in the native iOS app, such as 3D building views and transit maps.
Furthermore, users cannot sign in to their accounts on the web version, limiting access to saved locations and custom guides. Apple is expected to continue enhancing the web version and may still be exploring a dedicated Android app in the future.
